The County Public Libraries (MCPL) launched an online application system for obtaining full-service digital library cards. This initiative aims to enhance convenience, offering easier access to MCPL’s vast digital collection, which includes e-books, audiobooks, online databases, and various programs.
“Widespread access to the materials and services our public libraries provide is critical,” County Executive Marc Elrich stated. “Implementing this new online application and digital library card is a significant step in ensuring connection to these resources for more residents.”
Montgomery County residents aged 18 and older, as well as adult residents of the District of Columbia and several Northern Virginia counties—Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William—can now verify their identity through MCPL’s online registration form.
These digitally validated accounts will adhere to the same policies and procedures as those issued in person, in accordance with the MCPL Library Card Policy.
However, children under 18, nonresidents, and those who qualify for a library card due to employment or school attendance in Montgomery County but do not live in one of the partnering jurisdictions, must still apply in person. New and existing customers can add their library card to a smartphone digital wallet, allowing them access without a physical card. New customers will receive a link to add their card to their smartphone wallet in their confirmation email, while current cardholders can log in to their account on the MCPL website to enable this feature.
